How to embed video in your Emarsys block-based email templates
In this tutorial you will learn how to create, embed and send a Video Email using Emarsys and Playable, that plays automatically at the moment of opening the email.
This tutorial assumes that you create your email using flexible, content Block-Based templates within Emarsys.

Step by step guide on how to add video to Emarsys emails
1. Create an email in Emarsys
2. Select your Block-Based Email Template
3. Edit your Block-Based email template
This should placed in the position within your template where you ultimately wish your video clip to appear.
We have placed our Text Block at the head of the template sitting below the navigation bar.
4. Locate the Emarsys scripting language snippet
Once we have deleted this we can see a menu sitting above the Text Block, from this menu we select “</>“. On selecting this we are presented with a Pop up named “Emarsys Scripting Language snippet” this is where we will be inserting our Playable video later.
It is now time to create our video content.
3. Select the Playable Add-on
Hover over the Add-ons tab in the top navigation menu and select “Playable” from your Add-ons drop down listing.
If this is your first time using Playable you will need to contact your Emarsys Account Manger to have the Playable Add-on enabled on your account.
4. Playable Console – create your video content.
You are now going to create the video content which is to be embedded in your email.
The first step is to select “Add a Video” which commences the video creation process.
If this is the first time you have used Playable no Videos will show on this page, just the prompt to “Add Video“. When you re-visit this page to create future videos all your previous video will be shown on this page.
5. Upload your Video
Create a title for your Video, this will be used to locate it in the future in your Playable account and in reporting. Referencing the dimensions of the image position holder in the email template you created you can now enter the size of the video content you are looking to create, or keep the optimum size as suggested by Playable.
Enter a Video Title for the Video you are creating, this will help identify the Video in reporting. You have 2 options on how to upload your video content to Playable:
- Copy and paste a URL of the location of your content – Playable accepts content from all the major hosting platforms including You Tube, Vimeo, Brightcove, Wistia, Facebook and Instagram.
- File Upload – Upload a file from your computer – all video file formats are accepted including mp4, avi, mov and flv.
Once you have selected your video click the “Apply” button to upload your video file.
6. A Summary of your Video
Once you have uploaded your video it will be shown on the “Summary” page.
Playable automatically creates a 10 second version of your video which is shown here, this can be changed later if you wish.
As the video is playing within the recipients email you have the option to include a Click Action within the video.
To set your Click Action, add the URL of the page to which you want any clickers of the video to be re directed to and save it.
7. Setting the default image
Circa 2% of your recipients will not have the ability to experience video playback within their email.
To ensure these users experience is not compromised an image will be shown to these recipients in place of the video content. Here we select a still image from the video footage which will be shown to these recipients.
To set this image click the “Advanced” prompt.
We automatically select an image to be used from the Video Footage, this is shown in the Alt Image section, if you are happy with this, simply click “Apply“, if you wish to select a different image or upload a specific image follow the onscreen instructions for these options.
8. Edit your Video
Having completed the configuration of your “Video” it is now time to edit your video. To commence this click “Editor”
Our editor is designed to enable you to create a 10 second video clip from the full-length video you uploaded. It is this 10 seconds that will be published in your video email. In the editor you can crop the video to focus on your key content and select multiple scenes to make up the 10 seconds.
As you are creating your video email the editor will show you the duration of each scene and allow you to preview the edit and re-edit until you are happy with your final cut. Once you are happy with your edit click the “Continue” button.
9. Add enhnacements to your Video Email
You are now ready to add any enhancements to your video email including captions, a watermark, endcard or footer. Simply select the enhancements you wish to add and follow the onscreen prompts to add your chosen enhancements.
You now have completed creating your video clip so click the “Compile” button.
Playable now compiles this video, creating over a hundred versions which will be used to ensure each recipient receives the video file most suitable for their device, bandwidth and connection.
10. Preview & Sample your Video Email
Preview your video email in the major email clients using the drop down. You can also send a sample of your video email by completing the form.
You can add a message at the head of these emails if you wish, this can be useful when you are circulating for internal feedback. Once you are happy with the sample click “Embed” in the left hand navigation bar.
11. Embed your video clip into your Emarsys campaign
To embed your video within your Emarsys email template select “Emarsys” as your Email provider.
The grey coloured panel contains the Playable HTML code which contains all the code of the video clip you have just created.
You should copy this too your clipboard by clicking the “Copy to Clipboard” button.
12. Embed your video into your email template
To embed your video to your clip into your campaign you now go back to your Campaign within Emarsys and paste the Playable HTML Code you have on your clipboard directly into the “Emarsys Scripting Language Snippet” pop up within the “Code Snippet” area.
Finally add a name for the Snippet, we have used “Playable Video” and click the “OK” button.
The Pop up will now close and you will be back in the Block Build area, where you will note the former text area is now labelled in accordance with the name you gave your Code Snippet, in our case “Playable Video“
13. Preview your Campaign, test and send
To preview your video in your Emarsys template navigate to the preview page for the campaign.
Her you will see your video playing within the template.
You are now ready to test and send your campaign in the normal way.
